The reality of the situation is can summerised from the quote from a youtuber about CGI in movies : “You dont see good CGI, just the bad ones”. What I’m trying to say is that a good AI Assisted workflow is invisible to the world. You only notice when it fails.

This isn’t a tutorial on specific tools. It’s about understanding what fundamentally changes when you treat AI as part of your development lifecycle, not just fancy autocomplete (although the I have abued the facny autocomplete by starting a statment in the code with comment of intent and letting AI finish it).

From Tools to Partnership: The Mindset Shift

The difference between traditional development and AI first development isn’t what tools you use. It’s how you think about the work itself. In other words, it not a new IDE. Its a workflow shift, a process uplift. Getting a juniot peer engineer working alongside with you.

Traditional development centers on implementation: you understand a problem, design a solution, then spend most of your time translating that design into working code. The focus is “how do I build this?”

AI first development shifts the question to “what outcomes do I need, and where can I add value? Rather then toiling away on repetitive tasks, you focus on high impact work.”. It sounds subtle, but it changes everything.

This isn’t about using AI in isolation during coding. It’s about rethinking your workflow with AI as integrated infrastructure. I think the best way would be to have a clear division of labor between humans and AI. You pull in the strengths of AI with your own capabilities to create a synergy. Compress the time from an idea to a working prototype. Spend your time and energy then to work on the higher level problems that require the context and skills you bring to the table.

Where AI Shines

AI handles repetitive, pattern based work with remarkable consistency:

Code Generation: Writing boilerplate, common patterns, standard implementations. The necessary but not creatively demanding stuff.

Test Case Writing: Generating comprehensive test suites, edge cases, and test data. AI explores test scenarios more thoroughly than most humans have patience for. Though, more often than not, the generated tests are not perfect and require human review and refinement. (As of writing this, moving goal posts and all that :P )

However, the caveat being that AI can miss the larger context. So just dont throw a codebase at AI and say “Plz fix”. You need to have a nuanced ask.

Documentation: Keeping docs current, generating API documentation, writing comments that actually help.

Research from GitHub and Microsoft shows developers using AI code completion complete routine tasks 30-50% faster. I’m not saying that you need to take at its face value. I would recommend you to try it yourself. It often feels like IntelliSense (or whatver Jetbrains calls it) on steroids. You start with a comment describing your intent, and AI fills in the code.

AI doesn’t replace the core intellectual work of software development. It amplifies it.

Strategic Architecture: Weighing complex tradeoffs between performance, maintainability, cost, and business requirements. Deciding what to build and why.

Creative Problem Solving: Finding novel solutions to difficult problems. The kind of thinking that requires understanding nuance, questioning assumptions, and inventing new approaches.

Context and Judgment: Understanding what users actually need, not just what they say they want. Knowing when the “right” technical solution is the wrong business decision.

Ethical Considerations: Recognizing bias, considering broader impact, making value judgments about fairness and responsibility.

Developer Skills That Matter

If AI handles more routine implementation, what becomes more important for developers?

Let’s talk about what AI can’t do and what can go wrong.

Intent: It generates code that technically works but completely misses the point. It doesn’t understand implicit requirements or unstated goals. Alignement, though is improving, is still an issue. Sometimes what you ask for is not what you get.

Nuance: Business domains are full of edge cases, special situations, and “except when…” conditions. AI often misses these unless you’re extremely explicit.

You need to be able to critically evaluate what it gives you. There is still value in reading the documentation and learning the concepts. AI is not a substitute for understanding the fundamentals.

Bias Amplification: AI inherits biases from training data. Without diverse teams and conscious review, these biases get baked into production systems. Often times, the way you communicate can introduce bias into the output.

Security Vulnerabilities: AI generated code can include security flaws. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework emphasizes security-specific review of AI outputs. You should run security scans on AI generated code, just like you would with human-written code.
